Dress The Stage

It’s time to dress the stage
I’ve got it all laid out here, in between my ears
but I don’t know how to slide the scissors down the ribbon right.
And you come bursting through the door
your head a bonfire,
I rush to put it out. you say,
there’s no time,
this place is a disaster,
the curtains are tired from
dragging on the floor,
get ‘em up!
Our story will unfold
as it’s written in real-time, as I’m penning every line,
colored snakes uncoil from the mouths of all the players here,
and now the tremors are stirring,
the bodies are wavering
like tall grass.
Down in the valley
we made of clay
my breath is a gale,
your arms an earthquake.
We came to learn the harder way.
I thought you might not want to stay.
I think we’re gonna lose our heads
in the end.
But I’ve got the gusto
you’ve got the know-how
put them together, babe,
we gotta show now.
We’ve got no money,
so we’ll have to pull some
favors from our friends.
This one’s an axe and
this one’s a comet,
this one can sing a song
to break your heart, kid,
I’ve gotta feeling this will
unravel just as we had hoped.

I will plant tomatoes in the asphalt cracks,
so the crazies won’t be left behind.
I will write my name and number down for you.
And maybe we will play guitar one day.
I haven’t slept much in the year that’s passed.
I spend much too much time alone.
I walk downtown, past the safety hours.
And may never be heard from again.
So much for the simple hearts.
They’ll be eaten by the dead alive.
