![]() There is no songwriter in You Me & Iowa, only songwriters. When you listen to their music and hear a driving percussive drum and bass beat in 7/8, juxtaposed with an island-infused keyboard groove, a Spanish guitar melody, and harmonized vocals in the round, this is not the product of a single songwriter; it is the output of a collective effort. This approach has allowed the sound of You Me & Iowa to grow and evolve since their beginnings in late 2003, when singer/guitarist Andrew Carroll began rounding up a lineup of solid musicians. He met bassist Ryan Julio in a music theory class at Loyola Marymount University, and the two began playing music together and writing a handful of songs in their dorm rooms. The two quickly tired of playing without percussion and Andrew called on drummer Tony Benedetti, a childhood friend, to join the group. Andrew and Tony grew up playing music together in Sonoma, California, where they started their first band at the age of ten. The next semester Andrew played in a classical guitar ensemble with Tizoc Estrada, and was blown away by his skill and musicianship. They already had a show booked at The Roxy, under the name You Me & Iowa, and they asked if Tizoc would like to help finish writing a set of songs and perform with them. After the first show Tizoc was a permanant member. Ryan Ross joined the group in 2006, which opened a new sonic dimension to the band with his finely-crafted keyboard and synthesizer arrangements. You Me & Iowa has released two EP's and one full-length album, each record pushing the band into new musical territory. Currently, the guys are in the process of writing songs for their next full-length release, which promises to be their most experimental, but unified record to date.
