Playing Around in the Studio

Thursday, December 25, 2008

Merry Christmas from You Me & Iowa!

As a special holiday treat, we're giving out a recording of our cover of "Cantina Band", from Star Wars. Composed by John Williams, this was one of the most fun cover songs to figure out and put our own special spin on.

Mixed and mastered by Mark Camperell, this was recorded live in preparation for our Halloween show a couple months ago.

Enjoy, and we'll be back in LA for our December 30th show at Spaceland!

Rainy Monday

I like when Los Angeles shows some signs of actual real weather. Though today's light rain, much like most instances of rain in Los Angeles, freaks people out. It's okay, everybody, it happens all the time to the rest of the world. Water falls from the sky from time to time.

But it's going to be warm and cozy in The Hotel Cafe tonight, where we will be performing some new songs, some old songs, and some general holiday cheer. Come on out, we'd love to see you!

The Hotel Cafe
1623 1/2 N. Cahuenga Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028
With Test Your Reflex.
$8. 21+

We go on around 10:15PM.

Chess Moves and Rotating Tableaus

Mr. Knudsen, our esteemed music video director, has just released a behind-the-scenes featurette of the making of the Make Your Home (Smell Delicious) music video. It chronicles the preparation, the hard work, the sleepless nights, the steadfast crew, and the sheer luck that made the video possible.

Keep in mind, most everybody involved in this video got very little sleep before and during the shoot, and sheer adrenaline allowed us to power through.

Special thanks go out to the cast and crew, who's incredible work made this all possible.

And if you didn't see the finished product, here it is:

What a Day

Watching and participating in the elections yesterday was a particularly invigorating experience, and seeing huge numbers of new voters getting involved is such good news. Getting out there and making a difference can be so satisfying.

Andrew was in Chicago yesterday to celebrate with a certain presidential elect, but we'll be heading to the Silverlake Lounge this Thursday to perform a show with Go West Young Man.

We go on around 9:45. It's 21+, so bring a good fake if you're not of age. (Just kidding.... but not, really.)

Vids of Last Weekend's Spaceland Show

Just stumbled across these videos from last Saturday's Spaceland show with The Monolators. Thanks Elaine!

[BOO, VIDEOS WERE REMOVED! BUMMER!]

Halloween with The Modal Nodes

Halloween shows are fun. We went as The Ghostbusters 2 years ago, as Michael Jackson "Thriller" zombies last year, and this year's costumes have something to do with making the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs.

Our early halloween show last sunday was awesome, and seeing the Lost Libraries, The Henry Clay People, and Vaudeville all in costume was a sight. The Monolators' CD release show last Saturday was much fun too, and Summer Darling and Correatown were in full form.

HALLOWEEN NIGHT SHOW COMING UP!

We're going to be in Pasadena this Friday for a Halloween show at the Terrace. So come on out! You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Just kidding though.

But not really.

Kidding.

Northern California Trek This Weekend

We're heading up the coast this Thursday to San Francisco, the city of steep streets and constant fog, of hippies and Haight-Ashbury, of Golden Gate Bridges and Alcatraz.

Thursday night we perform at The Retox Lounge, with a local band called Kaputnik.

I just got word that this place is decorated like an airplane, with airplane seats and hulls aplenty. I can't wait.

628 20th Street, San Francisco, CA. We go on around 9PM. 21+

Friday night, we'll be back at The Phoenix Theater with On The Attack, featuring Tony's brother Gio on the bass. Those of you who know Gio from Toast Machine should have an idea of what you're in for.

201 Washington Street, Petaluma, CA 94952. Doors at 7:30PM. All Ages.

New Goodies for Our Lovely Iowans

We were invited to perform and record a new version of one of our songs at a small studio in Newport Beach a bit ago, and so this is the fruit of our labor. A reimagining of our song "Make Your Home (Smell Delicious)", it's almost as if our little song decided to escape the pressures of urban life by packing its bags and taking a sailboat journey to the sun-sparkled waters of the caribbean islands. We've missed having the little guy around, but now he's come back in digital form for you all to enjoy.

The lovely gents at Indie Rock Reviews and Bionic Ear Sessions were kind enough to be our guides in capturing this song version, and we'd highly encourage you to check out their website, where you can see a behind-the-scenes music video of the recording day, as well as an interview and photos of our shenanigans. They also have some great reviews of some up-and-coming indie artists as well as a wealth of information for musicians out there.

This Sunday's Show and Filming

So our in studio session this weekend went amazingly well. I can't wait to post the video and the new song version that we did. Writing an entirely new version of one of our songs in a week and recording it entirely in one days is exhilarating, I can tell you that.

So our big news for this week is that we're playing a show this Sunday at The Good Hurt, in Venice/West Los Angeles.

The show is going to be filmed for a new pilot for CBS Mobile, and we'd love for you all to come out and be seen at the show. Here are the details:

With Marvelous Toys
Doors are at 8PM. We go on around 9:30.

Sept 5th Show

Sadly we're going to have to miss out on the festivities of the September 5th Knitting Factory show, as one of our members can't be there. We're really bummed, as this was going to be a great time.

I hope you all still attend, it's the birthday show for Justin Riner of Loverlee.

New upcoming shows will be posted soon.

MUSIC VIDEO PREMIERE

Our music video for "Make Your Home (Smell Delicious)" is having its world premiere RIGHT NOW at artistdirect.com.

Check it out:

Make Your Home (Smell Delicious)

From the final track off of the new album, The Adventures of You Me & Iowa.

Directed by Matthew Knudsen, the video is one six minute long shot with no camera tricks or special effects. It took an immense crew of about 60 people to pull this one off. We're quite proud of how it turned out.
We'll be posting some more pictures from the film set soon.

One All-Star Lanes Show Cancelled, another All-Star Lanes Show Announced!

Hey guys,

We're sorry to announce that we've had to cancel our show at All-Star Lanes in Echo Park on the 19th, because of a family emergency.

But...

The good news is we're playing another show at the same venue 10 days later! Who would have thought.

It's a free show at the All-Star Lanes bowling alley in Echo Park with a ton of other bands, and it's being put on by the Glassell Park Kickballers (which we've been known to join from time to time). Actually, ironically, my huge bruise from the last kickball game hasn't faded yet.

Other bands playing the night:

Le Switch, The Henry Clay People, I Make This Sound, The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, Tandemoro, Les Blanks, The Hectors, The Voyeurs, Swim Party, Marvelous Toy, The Damselles & The TC4, and Nathan Wasilewski

Northern California Superstitions

To celebrate our show this Friday, the 13th at The Phoenix in Petaluma (and an in store performance at The Last Music Store in Santa Rosa earlier that day), I've made up a list of my top 3 superstitions about Friday the 13th in Northern California.

3. Good luck: Knocking on the wood of a redwood tree. Bad luck: knocking down a redwood tree with incessant good luck knocking.

2. Good luck: walking in the rain. Bad luck: remembering how actual weather didn't use to bother you until Los Angeles spoiled you.

1. Superstitious repetition: If you say "Hella" thirteen times in a row, Schwarzenegger will punch you in your face.

Come hang out with us if you're up in Petaluma this Friday! It's bad luck if you don't...
